Stockholm is a city of many islands and is surrounded by water. While most visitors visit Gamla Stan or Södermalm, the Swedish capital hides are filled with lesser-known islands waiting to be explored. For adventurous travelers seeking authentic experiences away from the crowds, Stockholm’s hidden gems offer unique landscapes, unique spots cultural wonders. Here’s your guide to Stockholm’s secret islands that deserve a spot on your itinerary.

1. Grinda: A nature lover’s paradise

Nestled in the Stockholm Archipelago, Grinda is a serene island perfect for those craving a blend of nature and relaxation. The island is filled with forests, small beaches, cliffs and a few charming red cottages. Good to know; on a warm summer (weekend) day it can get a bit more busy on this island. I recommend planning your trip during the week.

Things to Do on Grinda:

  • Hiking Trails: Explore scenic paths through pine forests and granite cliffs. Since 2024 there has been the Stockholm Archipelago Trail which also has a beautiful section on Grinda. You can find the route here: Stockholm Archipelago Trail

  • Grinda Wärdshus: Enjoy local Swedish cuisine at this cozy inn overlooking the water.

  • Enjoy a swim: While hiking and exploring the island you can find different swimming spots! The water is very clear and nice.

How to Get There: Grinda is easily accessible by ferry from central Stockholm, with regular departures via Waxholmsbolaget or Cinderellabåtarna.

2. Stora Essingen: Urban island life

Unlike many of Stockholm’s tourist hotspots, Stora Essingen remains delightfully untapped by visitors. But I like visiting this island because it has many beautiful sights and spots. This small island in Lake Mälaren offers a blend of suburban charm and lakeside serenity, ideal for those wanting to explore Stockholm’s local side.

Highlights of Stora Essingen:

  • Waterfront walks: Go to Oxhålsbadet and follow the boardwalk along the water. You can walk almost entirely around the island.

  • Swimming spot: Go to Oxhålsbadet for a swim or sunbath.

  • Hidden shops and cafés: Go to Books and Flowers, Bonne Femme (for a fika) or the Italian restaurant La Isola Grande

How to Get There: Hop on the bus nr. 1 from central Stockholm for a quick ride to Stora Essingen. During the summertime you can even take a little ferry from Riddarholmen to Stora Essingen. Check the timeline here.

3. Skeppsholmen: Art and culture hub

Although Skeppsholmen lies closer to central Stockholm, it often gets overlooked by travelers. This small island is a must-visit for art lovers, boasting a unique mix of museums, galleries, and historic buildings.

Cultural Must-Sees:

  • Moderna Museet: Discover contemporary and modern art from Swedish and international artists. Don’t forget to have a fika at their restaurants. There restaurant has one of the best views in Stockholm!

  • Outdoor Sculptures: Explore the island’s art installations. They are located just outside Moderna Museet!

How to Get There: Skeppsholmen is connected to central Stockholm by a photogenic bridge and easily reachable by foot, bike, or public transport.

5. Riddarholmen

Riddarholmen is a centrally located island and offers breathtaking views of Stockholm’s waterfront. Located close to Gamla Stan, this small yet significant island is home to some of the city’s most beautiful buildings.

What to See on Riddarholmen:

  • Stenbockska Palatset: One of my favorite buildings in the city, thanks to the beautiful pink-colored facade. A perfect place to take photos!

  • Gymnasiegränd: Walk along this street and you will get one of the best views of Södermalm.

  • Evert Taubert Terrass: The best time to go here is around sunset and enjoy the stunning views of Lake Mälaren and City Hall.

How to Get There: Riddarholmen is easily accessible by foot from Gamla Stan via Riddarholmsbron bridge.

7. Rödlöga: a true hidden-gem in the Stockholm archipelago

For a truly remote and tranquil experience, Rödlöga is a hidden gem located deep in the Stockholm Archipelago. It offers a perfect escape for those seeking solitude and natural beauty.

What to Do on Rödlöga:

  • Hiking and Exploring: Wander through scenic paths, rocky shores, and untouched forests. When arriving on Rödlöga there is a map with different pathways. Use this to plan you route.

  • Rödlöga Handel: Visit the charming local store for handmade goods and products. Bring cash, because that’s most accepted on this island.

  • Enjoy the calmness: you shouldn’t visit this island for a festive day, so embrace the calmness and it down for a moment at one of the beautiful rocks.

How to Get There: Rödlöga is accessible by ferry with Waxholmsbolaget, though it’s one of the outermost islands, so plan for a longer journey from Stockholm.
