The best 24-hour Stockholm itinerary

Stockholm is a city where you could easily spend several days, exploring its neighborhoods and exploring the archipelago. But what if you have only 24 hours to experience it all? No worries—I’ve crafted a perfect one-day itinerary to help you make the most of your short visit to this stunning city.

1. Check-In at Your Hotel

When time is limited, staying in the city center is key. Here are some highly recommended hotels for a convenient and comfortable stay:

  • Haymarket by Scandic

  • Scandic Grand Central

  • Downtown Camper by Scandic

All of these options are centrally located, making it easy to explore Stockholm’s main attractions.

2. Explore Gamla Stan

Start your day in Gamla Stan, the Old Town, which is a must-see in Stockholm. You can walk here or take the subway to Gamla Stan station. The best way to enjoy this area is by wandering through its narrow cobblestone streets. Discover hidden corners and charming alleys with no particular destination in mind. Some of my favorite spots include:

  • Brända Tomten

  • Tyska Skolgränd

  • Prästgatan

  • Gåsgränd

  • Stortorget (the iconic central square)

3. Visit Skeppsholmen

Next, head to Skeppsholmen, a small, picturesque island offering beautiful views of the city and a peaceful atmosphere. Take SL ferry number 82 from Slussen to reach Skeppsholmen (free with a 24-hour SL ticket, or buy a single ticket valid for 75 minutes). While here, visit the Moderna Museet, which features an impressive collection of modern art and offers free admission. Don’t miss their restaurant with spectacular views over Stockholm.

After your museum visit, take a moment to enjoy the stunning panoramic views of Gamla Stan and the city skyline.

4. Experience Swedish Nature at Djurgården

No trip to Sweden is complete without a taste of its nature. If you’re short on time, Djurgården is your best option. From Skeppsholmen, take SL ferry number 82 to Djurgården. Once there, you can:

  • Visit Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum and zoo.

  • Enjoy a relaxing fika at the charming Rosendals Trädgård.

  • Walk around the island to Biskopsudden for serene waterfront views.

  • Visit the world-famous Vasa Museum to see the impressive 17th-century warship.

5. Sunset at Monteliusvägen

As your day winds down, head to the lookout point at Monteliusvägen in Södermalm. It’s only 500 meters from Slussen subway station and offers breathtaking views of the city, especially during sunset. This is a perfect spot to end your day with a panoramic view of Stockholm.

Bonus Tips for Your Stockholm Adventure

  • Taste Traditional Swedish Food: Try a cinnamon bun (kanelbulle) or cardamom bun (kardemummabulle). For dinner, treat yourself to delicious Swedish meatballs at Restaurant Kvarnen in Södermalm.

  • Use Public Transport: A 24-hour SL ticket is a great investment for unlimited rides on ferries, buses, and subways. Pay attention to the art installations in the subway stations—they’re like a traveling art exhibition!

Final Thoughts

Though 24 hours is a short time to visit Stockholm, this itinerary will guide you through some of the city’s most beautiful and memorable sights. Enjoy your adventure!
