Is it possible to visit Stockholm on a smaller budget?

When people find out I live in Stockholm, one of the first things they ask is, "Isn’t Stockholm really expensive?" It’s true that compared to cities in southern Europe, Stockholm can be pricey. However, with a little planning and some smart choices, you can absolutely enjoy Stockholm on a smaller budget. In this guide, I’ll share my best budget-friendly tips for accommodation, food, transportation, and activities.

Affordable Accommodation in Stockholm

Finding a place to stay is essential, but central hotels in Stockholm can be expensive. If you're traveling on a budget, you might want to consider staying slightly outside the city center—but keep in mind that transportation costs may increase. For a more economical stay, try a hostel. Here are some great options:

  • Generator Stockholm: A stylish, modern hostel that doesn’t feel like a typical hostel.

  • STF af Chapman & Skeppsholmen: Sleep on a historic boat or stay in the main building, both within walking distance of major attractions.

  • STF Zinkensdamm Hostel: Located on the charming island of Södermalm.

Alternatively, consider booking an Airbnb. Renting a room in an apartment gives you the added benefit of a kitchen, so you can cook your own meals. Central neighborhoods like Kungsholmen, Södermalm, Vasastan, Norrmalm, and Östermalm are convenient to stay.

Getting Around Stockholm on a Budget

Stockholm’s public transport system is well-organized and cost-effective if you plan ahead. Start by reading my guide on how to get from Stockholm’s airport to the city center—you could save up to 200 SEK!

For general travel, buy an SL travel card for unlimited rides over 24 hours, 72 hours, or a week. This pass covers buses, trains, and ferries, including trips to Djurgården and Vaxholm. You can even use it to get to the airport. It’s far better value than buying single tickets.

If you’re staying centrally, you might not need much public transport at all. In that case, walking or renting a Lime scooter are fun, convenient options.

Eating Out Without Breaking the Bank

Food in Stockholm doesn’t have to be expensive. A great tip is to enjoy the Dagens Rätt—the daily lunch special offered on weekdays. For 100-170 SEK, you’ll get a main dish, water, and bread, even in central locations. Some budget-friendly spots include:

  • Vigårda: Delicious street food with great lunch deals.

  • Indian Street Food & Co: Hearty Indian dishes with great lunch specials but also great for a nice dinner.

  • Blå Dörren: Affordable traditional Swedish food (and great location!)

  • Brunos Korvbar: Sample traditional Swedish sausages starting from 70 SEK.

For vegetarians, Hermans is a top pick. Their weekday lunch buffet costs 189 SEK and includes tea and coffee. The generous buffet, stunning views, and organic food make it a favorite for budget-conscious travelers—and even non-vegetarians love it!

Saving on Drinks

If you’re serious about budgeting, avoid drinking alcohol in Stockholm’s restaurants and cafes—alcoholic beverages are notoriously expensive. A beer can cost 60 SEK or more, while wine prices often start at 110 SEK per glass. Instead, buy alcohol at Systembolaget, the state-owned liquor store. Better yet, stick to water—Stockholm’s tap water is excellent and usually served for free. Some cafes even offer free refills on coffee or tea.

Free Sights and Activities

The best things to do in Stockholm often don’t cost a thing. Put on comfortable shoes and explore the city by foot:

  • Wander the narrow streets of Gamla Stan, the Old Town.

  • Stroll to Skeppsholmen and visit the Moderna Museet, a fantastic modern art museum with free entry on Fridays from 6-8 pm.

  • Experience nature on Djurgården, a peaceful island in the heart of the city.

  • End your day with breathtaking sunset views from Monteliusvägen in Södermalm.

If you have an SL card, take advantage of it to explore further. Head to Saltsjöbaden or Tyresta National Park for a taste of Sweden’s stunning natural beauty. And make sure to hop on one of the SL ferries. For example the SL ferry to Vaxholm, a charming archipelago village.

Final Thoughts

Stockholm can be expensive, but with these tips, you’ll see that visiting on a budget is entirely possible. Smart planning, affordable dining choices, and free activities mean everyone can enjoy the beauty of this Scandinavian gem without overspending. Happy travels!
